Termite-Resistant Building Materials

It is important for you to understand that not all wood materials are favorable to termites. Therefore, if you have to use wood materials in your home, make sure that they are termite-resistant. There are some specific wood species that do not attract termites, such as Juniper, Cedar, and Redwood.  

Avoid Chronically Moist Soil And Standing Water In And Around Your Home

Wet areas like moist soil and standing water attract termites. Moist soil leads to termite infestation. Therefore, inspect in and around your home for moist soil and standing water. If you notice such things, eliminate the same. For example, in order to keep the crawl spaces dry, effective cross-ventilation system must be created and maintained through foundation wall vents.

Sand Barriers

In order to deter subterranean termites, you can create sand barriers under patios and fence posts. Because of the sand barriers, the termites will not be able to tunnel through sand.

Seal Wood Materials That Are Exposed To Moisture

Check for wood materials that are exposed to moisture. If you notice such things, seal the same using a weather sealer. Some of the areas for inspection include the bottom of wall edges and the exterior window frames.

Other Things That You Can Do 

§   Maintain good drainage system. Make sure that all exterior grades are sloping away from wood structures.

§   In order to prevent mold build up and moisture on wood walls, you are recommended to prune back the plants that are close to your home.

§   While you sprinkle water in the lawn, make sure that you are not spraying directly onto the siding and wood walls.

§   If there are cracks on the seals in the patios or foundations, fill those cracks with 16-grit sand.
